Leventhal School of Accounting Degree Programs
USC Leventhal’s programs are widely recognized in the top tier of accounting education worldwide. In fact, Leventhal is the only private university accounting program to be consistently recognized as excellent in all facets of accounting education. Our undergraduate program is ranked fourth by U.S. News & World Report and seventh by Public Accounting Report. Public Accounting Report also ranks our Master of Accounting program fourth and Ph.D. program 10th.
Undergraduate Program
All undergraduates meet with academic advisers to develop a course plan individualized to their needs. The plan can include a double major in business or another area, adding a minor, or taking advantage of our Progressive Master’s Degree program, which offers simplified early admission to our MAcc or MBT program, students earn two degrees in five years or fewer.
Our flexible curriculum develops technical proficiency, analytical- and critical-thinking skills, and oral and written communication skills. Ethical principles and group work modeled after the real-world business environment are also important components.
While international study trips are available through Marshall and Leventhal, we also emphasize global business practices in the classroom. For example, one of our courses offers a challenging and exciting group project with students at a Chinese university via Skype, providing firsthand insight into working in a global environment.
USC Leventhal has a student-focused culture, with numerous opportunities to engage with faculty; develop teamwork, networking and leadership skills; serve the community; and meet professionals from accounting firms and businesses through events and student organizations.
Master's Programs
USC Leventhal’s master’s programs are highly selective: we receive more than 1,000 applications and accept about 160 students, 25 to 30 percent of whom are our own undergraduates and the rest from at least 75 U.S. and international universities. We offer merit and diversity scholarships and an eight-week Summer Intensive program for non-accounting majors. Highly successful career placement (90 percent) is another advantage of a graduate degree from Leventhal.
USC Leventhal offers three master’s programs, which all qualify students to take the Uniform CPA Exam:
Master of Accounting (MAcc): The MAcc program is a full-time, one-year program designed to prepare graduates for careers in professional accounting, public accounting, industry and government.
Master of Business Taxation (MBT): The MBT program is a full-time, one- year program that provides a broad understanding of taxation at both the federal and local levels.
Master of Business Taxation – Working Professionals (MBT-WP): The MBT-WP program is a part-time evening program, usually completed in two to three years, that provides the same rigorous curriculum as the full-time program, but is designed for students who wish to remain fully employed while pursuing graduate studies.
Ph.D. Program
USC Leventhal’s Ph.D. program, a five- year, in-depth study of the fundamentals of accounting, places research-oriented graduates with elite research universities in the United States and abroad. Because the program is small and exclusive, our students work closely with faculty on research projects throughout their tenure, often authoring or co-authoring one or more papers and publishing them in major journals before graduation.
Students study in small seminars, conduct cutting-edge scholarly research in any of four areas — financial accounting, managerial accounting, tax accounting, and auditing and corporate governance — and learn the art of teaching, all under the guidance of faculty mentors.
Our program features a competitive assistantship package guaranteed for four years, and our students have also been recipients of coveted national fellowships.
Graduates have received tenure-track offers from top research universities, including Arizona, Columbia, Cornell, MIT, Stanford and Texas-Austin.
