Personal Statement(簡稱PS)顧名思義，是指個人陳述。需要注意的是，PS只是文書中的一種，還有一種叫SOP(Statement of Purpose)或SOI(Statement of Intent)。通俗來講，只是叫法不一樣，本質(zhì)上都是學(xué)校進一步了解你個性化特點的方式。
個人陳述應(yīng)當提供具體事例來說明自己有潛力成為學(xué)校學(xué)術(shù)社群的一員，向招生委員會描述你是什么樣的一個人。你可以展現(xiàn)你有什么樣的學(xué)術(shù)潛力，或者你來自小眾群體，學(xué)術(shù)背景與他人不同，你所代表的群體或許之前在高等教育中處于劣勢地位，你是如何立志要增強學(xué)術(shù)人群的多樣性，為同學(xué)帶去不同的視角。
個人陳述(PS)更多關(guān)注的是個人成長，關(guān)于你是什么樣的一個人，來自什么樣的背景，如何能為學(xué)校的學(xué)生群體帶來多樣性(diversity)。實際上，美國大學(xué)招生委員會特別重視那些克服了生活中的艱難困苦，經(jīng)過自己的頑強拼搏取得令人稱贊的成績的青年。另外在你所處的人文、經(jīng)濟和自然環(huán)境中，你是否發(fā)現(xiàn)和抓住了機遇并戰(zhàn)勝了挑戰(zhàn)，你到底為什么選擇該校的該研究生項目也是要寫出的。招生委員會想通過對你的背景、性格、特質(zhì)、想法和經(jīng)歷等評判你是否適合讀該研究生項目，是否更有競爭力和取得事業(yè)上的成功。

Writing the Personal StatementHelpful tips and advice for drafting a compelling personal statement when applying for graduate admission：What does this statement need to accomplish?The personal statement should give concrete evidence of your promise as a member of the academic community，giving the committee an image of you as a person.This is also where you represent your potential to bring to your academic career a criticalperspective rooted in a non-traditional educational background, or your understanding of the experiences of groups historically under-represented in higher education and your commitment to increase participation by a diverse population in higher education.What kinds of content belongs here?Anything that can give reviewers a sense of you as a person belongs here;you can repeat information about your experiences in your research statement，but any experiences that show your promise, initiative, and ability to persevere despite obstacles belongs here. 任何能幫助招生官進一步了解你的內(nèi)容都可以出現(xiàn)在個人陳述里。在研究陳述中已出現(xiàn)過的信息也可再次提及。一般建議可以出現(xiàn)的內(nèi)容有： 能體現(xiàn)你學(xué)術(shù)潛力、個人主動性、克服困難的經(jīng)歷。展現(xiàn)你溝通能力的經(jīng)歷，例如如何通過與其他專業(yè)學(xué)者溝通實現(xiàn)合作最大化的事例。在學(xué)習(xí)中曾面臨過的挑戰(zhàn)和困難，分享這樣的經(jīng)歷既有助于讓你在選拔中脫穎而出，也能增加你獲得獎學(xué)金的概率。如果由于客觀原因你有部分成績不是很理想，你可以在個人陳述中進行解釋，但不要把重心放在困難上，否則會讓招生官覺得你在找借口，應(yīng)該把關(guān)注點放在你是如何發(fā)揮主觀能動性嘗試解決問題的。這樣能讓招生官相信未來學(xué)習(xí)中你也具備同樣的韌性來克服挑戰(zhàn)。
